Firefly Cycles was founded by three former employees of Independent Fabrication & Merlin Cycles in 2011. Firefly is now famous for their titanium bikes, but they started out building Columbus XCr stainless steel tig welded frames in 2011. This one is #033, from 2011 or 2012. It has a pretty solid build featuring ENVE cockpit and canti fork, Chris King headset and BB, SRAM Force 1x10, and TRP EuroX Carbon brakes. It sits at 18.2 pounds as pictured, and getting it down to 17 pounds even will be easy by replacing the Fulcrum wheelset & heavy tires. This is one rare and special bike. A new Firefly CX frame starts at $5000, grabbing this under $3000 complete is hard to beat as a cyclocross race bike or rim brake gravel bike.
According to an interview with Firefly, these early SS bikes used "Columbus Max profile tubeset in XCr. We call it Firefly MegaMax because it is based on the Max profile but uses larger diameter tubing to better take advantage of the properties of XCr. The down tube starts as a butted 38mm tube and (like the top tube) is bi-axially swaged into opposing ovals. It is ovalized vertically at the head tube and horizontally at the bottom bracket. The vertical oval at the head tube makes for the strongest possible non gusseted TIG welded joint at the most heavily stressed area of the frame. The horizontal oval at the bottom bracket adds considerably to the lateral stiffness of the frame while sprinting, stiffens up the bottom bracket, yet doesn’t detract from the compliance or feel of the revered XCr tubeset.
Size (stock 57cm size)
- Top tube (effective): 57cm
- Seat tube: 56.5cm (c-c)
- Headtube: 131mm
- Chainstays: 424mm
Near mint very clean lightly ridden condition! Mechanically it is perfect with zero flaws or wear to note. The frame is overall extremely clean and almost pristine aside a spot on either side of the top tube to mention (both labeled in pics). The drive-side has a TINY dent from a handlebar, it's almost unnoticeable. Maybe 1mm deep. The non-drive side of the top tube has a 2" section that has a couple light scuffs (more noticeable than the dent, but still very minor). No chainsuck or slap marks. There's a few other very small finish imperfections here and there on the frame, but none that are worth noting.
Components functionally and cosmetically are near perfect. The only wear to note is a few pinpoint finish wear spots on the rear derailleur and the bar tape has a small tear on the back of the bars caused in storage. Crank is pristine, arm ends don't have a single mark. Pads, cables, tires show negligible wear. Ready to ride or show, with no points of concern!
