Campagnolo Sportman / Tipo Hub Set: 36H x 120mm - Mid & High Flange - Round Holes - One Piece Shells - Skewers - RARE (EXC)
This unique hubset consists of a Nuovo Tipo rear hub with a traditional large flange (75mm) and a Sport/Sportman front hub with a mid flange (68mm). Cosmetically they are EXACTLY the same except the flange size difference, and they both run on the Nuovo Record axle. Skewers are slightly different, the front features "Patent Campagnolo" font on the cam end and a c-clip lever attachment and the rear has no cam end font and an acorn nut attachment.
Very little is known of these elusive hubs. Consensus is split between being part of the "Sport" group (model 1006/A) or the "Sportman" group, both produced from roughly 1960-1963. Both are situated between Record & Gran Sport. They feature a one piece alloy shell/flanges, and the same axle as the Record hub, where the otherwise similar Gran Sport has a 3-piece design with pressed on flanges and a cheaper axle. The center shell is the Campy winged wheel logo, with the Campagnolo name printed below. Flanges are more of a mid flange than high flange, measuring 68mm diameter vs the NR/Tipo high flange's 75mm. These hubs should have appeared in Campagnolo Catalog 14, but they are not present.
Excellent used shape. Bearings are buttery smooth and well adjusted with no grit/play. Some cosmetic wear on the flanges and shells but nothing more than light spots. Show worthy for some bikes, lots of life for a rider.
