Product Description

Black Mountain Cycles is a small, quality driven full service repair shop and framebuilder workshop run by Mike Varley in Point Reyes Station, California.  The Monster Cross is designed to be a fast and affordable do-it-all bike based around 700x45c to 700x50c tires (or 40mm w/fenders).  It's classically designed with a lovely Pacenti bi-plane lugged fork, horizontal dropouts, barely sloping top tube, 1 1/8" straight headset, & standard QR axles.  Fully loaded with fender mounts, rear rack braze-ons, & mid fork eyelets for lowrider etc racks.  It's a great gravel rig, fully loaded bikepacking machine, all-road enduro with a handlebar bag a la Jan Heine, dedicated monstercross singletrack shredder, cx race bike, or versatile commuter bike with fenders and racks.  It's the small builder competition to the All City Gorilla Monsoon.

This one is a 2018 "version 5.3" in electric "grass green".  It started life as their Ultegra build that retailed for about $2600, and received lots of high level upgrades.  The most obvious are the White Industries VBC crankset, Paul Mini Moto / Touring brakes in black with 3DV purple hardware, XT rear derailleur, and Dura Ace 7900 bar end shifters.  With this build, it would have retailed closer to $3500

This is BCM's size "64cm".  This is dictated by the seat tube measurement, to the very top of the seat tube.  It's more standard measurements put it in the 60cm to 61cm.  It's an XL frame for sure.  See numbers below and full geometry chart in images.

  • Effective top tube: 61cm
  • Seat tube c-c: 60cm
  • Head tube: 215mm
  • Chainstays: 432mm (to very front setting, 18mm of adjustability backward)
  • BB drop: 7cm
  • Trail: 62.8mm
  • Standover: 892mm
  • Saddle height in photo, to rail center: 790mm

This bike has less than 500 miles on it, and many parts are brand new or nearly new.  It overall shows as a new bike that's fresh off the local bike shop's showroom floor.  I can't find a single flaw on the frame/paint aside from axle marks inside the dropouts.  Similarly the only component wear to note is a tiny scratch on one brake lever, a mark on the crank self-extracting bolt, slight ano wear on a skewer cam/lever, the moulding nipples on the edge knobs of the front tire are mostly gone, and the very start of the anodizing on the chainring teeth wearing off.  Zero scratches/scrapes on crank arm ends, not a single mark on the underside of downtube/bb/chainstays.  Let's call it an open-box new bike :p
