This is a true piece of vintage USA made bicycle history! The Trimble-designed Kestrel 4000 first released in 1987 was the world's first fully carbon fiber bike, designed in the now commonplace monocoque method. Round carbon tubes had been used with metal lugs before, but this is the first monocoque frame. It was WAY ahead of it's time, and graced the cover of every cycling magazine exclaiming how wild and revolutionary this bike is. Only the 1987 model had black decals and the multi-color rainbow "K" headtube decal. It's frame number is 11596, identifying it as the 596th 4000 model Kestrel made.
This one has a solid build including some of it's original 1987 model C-Record gruppo including Delta brakes, plus 8sp Record Ti ERGO & derailleurs. Its rounded out by a rare Italia Turbo Super saddle, Modolo cockpit, high end Mavic G.L. 330 tubular rims. This is one serious build with the only corner cut being the Chorus 8s hubs.
I am planning to part this out, only because it has a handful of newer parts and it makes more sense to part than build it correct for me. Built up with the correct gruppo, this will be a museum piece. But that's a project for someone else! I'm offering it up for sale here at a pretty decent price, only for as long as it takes me to go through my other backlog of items to list and I part it out.
- Top tube: 55cm
- Effective top tube: 54.5cm
- Seat tube: 54cm c-tt
**Rear derailleur's mounting bolt casing is cracked, and the derailleur must be replaced before riding**
Aside from above mentioned derailleur crack, the bike and components are in excellent to near mint shape with low miles. The frame has zero damage. Paint and decals are almost pristine. The only wear I see is one spot of marks mid driveside chainstay, a few little marks on the underside of downtube/BB, and a couple very minor spots on the driveside Kestrel logo. Aside from those any paint blemishes are too small to mention.
Components have only received a light cleaning, and with a better clean they'll look very nice. The rims show light braking tract wear and are true/smooth. ERGO shifters are near mint, with no real hood wear and only a couple tiny marks on the lever blades. Seatpost, saddle, headset are exc-near mint with only minor wear. Crank is excellent with light/average arm marks but very clean chainrings. Tires show minimal miles but have drying sidewalls and being 30 year old tires should be replaced if you plan to ride this more than occasionally.
